>they'd write philosophy instead
Not sure what you're referring to as classics, but different genres obviously attract different readers. Do you want to reach a certain type of sperg who spends his days studying his navel? Write philosophy. Want to reach another type of sperg who spends his days navel gazing ? Write comicbooks.
Most books are published because the publisher expects a profit, you make profit by being saleable at a scale. If I want an actually good/insightful book I can do a lot better than browsing the barnes and noble new shelves, and to a large degree this means looking backward.
Also, philosophy is relevant to the average person but the average philosophy book is part of a network of navelgazing that has more self references than the marvel cinematic universe. A solid standalone novel, or history book or what have you can make the same philosophical points without refference to that paper universe but only living in the reader's understanding of reality.

^ have you seen any of the greats, like sopranos, breaking bad, better call saul, dexter etc.?
i kind of envy you bcuz i've seen almost everything, so i have to dig through new releases to find shit that's watchable. plenty of good shows still, but waiting an entire week between episodes just kills me.

^ you should try series. i can't make it through the average movie these days in one sitting either. but a tv series is much more immersive, after a couple episodes you just get attached to the characters and they're often much deeper and have better character development compared to a 90 min movie.

^ i can only watch movies when eating nice food. just watching them with no food is too boring for me.

^ yeah, food is also one of my few pleasures, but i get satiated too quickly and if i overdo it slightly, it just makes me feel sick. stories are endless tho, you can never have enough.

i just realized that screenwriting would be easier to write, since it really is just action beats and dialogue. but it feels like a waste because no one reads screenplays, it's just an intermediary step to make a movie. i want to write a web novel series but i lack the skill to do it.

writing a story seems very different from other writing. like usually when i'm communicating with other people, i'm circling an idea and each sentence sheds more light on the core concept i'm trying to deliver. with stories, it's very different, i can't do it off the cuff, sentence by sentence. the only plausible way that works is writing down "beats", this happens, then this, then that, like a sequence of actions. and then editing that and filling in the aesthetic gaps to make it nice to read. it's still quite difficult and result isn't very good.

i watched 2-3 seasons, it's a decent crime drama, very character driven. i don't know what the intended goal of the show-runners was supposed to be, but it just made me hate niggers and poor people even more.
