just a clueless recruiter who didnt even understand my work history. then insulted me by saying my most recent work wasnt applicable since i wasnt working a wagie company for it (i didnt need to, it was open source work that i was doing for myself.) apparently software engineering work is only valid if you're paid for it.

maybe he thinks it wasn't professional level work because it was a personal project and not battletested? did you have a lot of downloads/stars on your project? you could've offered to walk him through it and talk about how you solved things.

i feel like theres not much point talking to these hr people. they send in people who have no tech skills to interview engineers and then you're meant to try explain things. i worked for like 3 years on my own stuff because i didnt need a job and in his mind i was just unemployed. oh well ig, i cant say i really want a job again anyway.

I'm unsure how you solve such dilemma. You could be honest and say you are well off and didn't need to work, were doing passion projects. Best case the norms respect wealth and freedom but worst and most likely case especially if it's a vapid hr they get butthurt and mad you could exist outside of their slavery and aren't "loyal" or even jealous cause your different and remind them their wagers is drudgery and they don't want to acknowledge the painful truth
Alternatively you lie and say you were taking care of a sick family member and simply had the means to support yourself while working on your skills to get gung ho back in the work force where you cherish and belong!🤓

im always in a weird position like this. my entire career is bizarre. ill think of a more tactful way to put what the past 3 years have been like.
