It really depends on what the goal is. To get good at software engineering takes years of practice and you'll be doing it in a time where jobs for it are being crushed, replaced, slashed, out-competed, out-sourced... I wouldn't recommend wizzies learn to code any more.
What do you want:
- money? Regular jobs offer more job security than coding now.
- intellectual challenge? Maths is better for that than coding.
- creativity? Drawing or music is better for creativity.
- passion? The more you know about software the more drab it will be.
It's a soulless activity in more ways than one. Software's time for new blood has come and gone. If they enter the point where there's not enough new blood they'll have to actually pay for it now. Given they made too many enter.
