you can justify anything within the framework of psychiatry if you can demonstrate empirically somehow that the patient is "doing better". a lot of patients got much more passive and "calm" after electroshock and lobotomies, because they were brain damaged, but to the psychiatrist, their symptoms got "better". that's what happens when you focus on a single variable instead of considering the broader context of health. a socially anxious patient might become more functional if you pump him with benzos and convince him to go against his fear, but you increase his stress and create an otherwise tortured existence for him, but the psych is happy because one variable got better.
